One of the autochthonous drinks par excellence is “cider”, an alcoholic beverage that is obtained from the juice of fermented apple. Originally, this drink was made in farmhouses, mainly in the northwest of the province of Guipuzcoa. Traditionally, the landlords went from farmhouse to farmhouse to taste the cider produced by their neighbors. Currently, those who want to taste different ciders go to a cider house to go from kupela to kupela (barrica in Euskera).
You can visit the cider museum and explore its apple orchards in the company of a local guide. The interpretation center has all the necessary resources and technologies, to show, through interactive material, images and games, the history of the world of the apple, the “sagardoa” and its importance in our culture and our customs.
This visit includes a tasting and guided tasting of the cider with the traditional style of “txotx”, apple must and a liqueur. The initiation to the txotx is realized: way to take the glass, inclination to obtain a good granillo or “txinparta”, visualization of the tone, meaning of the different colors and distinction of the aromas, etc.
To complete the experience, nothing better than visiting a cider house, where this drink is made. There, you can walk through the apple orchards, see the facilities, and of course, taste the typical menu of cider houses: Cod omelette, fried cod, pork chop, cheese, quince and walnuts. And of course, cider, without limit!
